Masechet Yadayim (or Yadayim) is the eleventh tractate in the Order of Taharot and has only Mishnah commentary.
The tractate deals with the laws of impurity and washing of hands.
Chapters of the Tractate[edit | edit source]
- Mei Reviit - This chapter deals with the laws of washing hands: the measure of water required, the vessels with which one may wash, the type of water with which one may wash, and the qualifications of the person washing.
- Natal L'Yado - Washings that do not purify, the part of the hand that can become impure, as well as various cases of doubt in the laws of hand impurity.
- HaMachnis - The chapter begins with a discussion of things that make the hands impure, and continues with a discussion about holy writings that make the hands impure. Along the way, there is a discussion about the sanctity of the books of Shir HaShirim (Song of Songs) and Kohelet (Ecclesiastes).
- Bo BaYom - The chapter begins with several laws on different subjects that were established on the day that Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah was appointed head of the academy. Afterwards, it returns to deal with the impurity of hands resulting from touching holy writings, and through an argument between the Sadducees and Pharisees about holy writings, it concludes with a collection of disputes between the Pharisees and Sadducees.
