Mezuzah Campaign is one of the ten campaigns initiated by the Lubavitcher Rebbe. It was announced in 1974 (5734), alongside other campaigns such as "Torah Campaign," "Charity Campaign," "Home Full of Jewish Books Campaign," and "Shabbat Candle Lighting Campaign" (Neshek).

From the beginning, the Rebbe consistently emphasized the importance of affixing kosher mezuzahs to every Jewish home and checking them periodically. He often referenced the Talmudic teaching that a mezuzah has the special merit of protecting the home, its inhabitants, and their belongings at all times.

Historical Background

The Mezuzah Campaign was officially launched in 1974, the same year several other campaigns were introduced.

The primary goal of this campaign is to ensure that every room in a Jewish home has a kosher mezuzah, as it offers divine protection to those within the house and safeguards them wherever they go. This is in accordance with the verse in Psalms: "The Lord shall guard your going out and your coming in, from this time forth and forevermore."

Protection and Safety

The Rebbe declared that many tragedies could have been avoided if the Mezuzah Campaign had been implemented 20 years earlier.

The Talmud teaches that the mezuzah not only protects the home and its inhabitants but also those who leave it. The Rebbe highlighted this aspect of protection, urging the public to take its significance seriously.

The Rebbe also emphasized that every individual mezuzah affixed contributes to the collective protection of the Jewish people, enhancing the safeguarding effect of all mezuzahs already in place.

The Ma'alot Incident

Following the tragic Ma'alot massacre on the 23rd of Iyar, 5734, where Palestinian terrorists took children from a Tzfat school hostage and murdered them during a failed rescue attempt by the IDF, the Rebbe instructed that the mezuzahs in the school be checked. It was discovered that the number of invalid mezuzahs corresponded to the number of fatalities. When news of additional casualties emerged, the Rebbe requested further checks, revealing additional defective mezuzahs, matching the total number of victims.

The Rebbe addressed this tragedy, urging increased awareness and vigilance regarding the mitzvah of mezuzah. He remarked:

"I was fervently involved in the Mezuzah Campaign. I felt pushed and restless to speak about and demand action regarding mezuzahs. I didn’t understand why at the time, but now we see how closely connected this tragedy was to the mitzvah of mezuzah."
