Yaakov Kuli Slonim (Son-in-law of the Mitteler Rebbe)
Reb Yaakov Kuli Slonim was the son of Chassid Reb Zalman Reizes, one of the greatest chassidim of the Alter Rebbe.
His grandmother on his mother's side, Rebbetzin Reizel, who was very wealthy and respected in her city of Shklov, opposed the Alter Rebbe and his approach. Therefore, when her two sons-in-law (Reb Pinchas and Reb Zalman Reizes) became chassidim, she gave them no peace and harassed them greatly. Due to doctors' concerns for her daughter's life who was about to give birth, Rebbetzin Reizel traveled to the Alter Rebbe to ask for his bracha. The Alter Rebbe promised her that if she would stop bothering her two sons-in-law - her daughter would give birth safely. After the Rebbetzin promised, Reb Yaakov Kuli was born.
After his marriage to Rebbetzin Menucha Rochel, daughter of the Mitteler Rebbe, the couple lived in Lubavitch. In 1832 their firstborn son Reb Yehuda Leib was born, in 1833 their son Reb Levi Yitzchak was born, and in 1840 their son Reb Mordechai DovBer was born.
In 1845, Reb Yaakov and his family made aliyah to Eretz HaKodesh and settled in the city of Chevron, in the Mitteler Rebbe's property. He headed the Chevra Kadisha and the Gemach organization. With this settlement, they renewed the Chabad Jewish settlement in Chevron and their home became the spiritual center of the city.
On the 2nd of Teves 1857, Rabbi Yaakov passed away and was laid to rest on the Mount of Olives in Yerushalayim.
