Life HistoryEdit

The holy Rabbi Shalom Shachna was born on 20 Elul 5532, to his father Chassid Reb Noach Altshuler, who was among the chassidim of Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Vitebsk, and to his mother Ruchama, sister of the Maggid of Mezritch. His father passed away while he was still a child, and the Rebbe Shneur Zalman of Liadi took him into his home where he grew up and was educated.

The Alter Rebbe arranged his marriage to his daughter, Rebbetzin Devorah Leah, who passed away shortly after. The chassidim asked the Alter Rebbe: Why did he trouble himself to become related through marriage to Reb Noach for his daughter when there were the students of the Maggid of Mezritch? The Alter Rebbe answered them: "Er iz gut oif plod" (He is good for offspring. In Russian "plod" means offspring).

From this marriage was born Rabbi Menachem Mendel, who later became the third Rebbe of Chabad and became known as the "Tzemach Tzedek".

When the Alter Rebbe published the Tanya for the first time, Rabbi Shalom Shachna was involved in its publication.

After the passing of Rebbetzin Devorah Leah - mother of the Tzemach Tzedek - the Alter Rebbe arranged a match between her husband Reb Shalom Shachna and Rebbetzin Rivka, daughter of Rabbi Aharon of Karlin (one of the students of the Maggid of Mezritch). From this marriage, two daughters were born, Devorah and Esther Hadas.

He passed away in the summer of 5567.

Lineage to King DavidEdit

Some claim that his father Rabbi Noach Altshuler was a descendant of Rabbi Yechiel Hillel Altshuler from the holy community of Yavorov - author of the well-known biblical commentary "Metzudat David" and "Metzudat Tzion" (which are mainly collected from his father's teachings, and therefore named after him). And in any case, it is certain that he was from the family of the "Metzudot" which is famous for its lineage to King David of Israel.
