Dovid Leikes

Rabbi Dovid Leikes, son of Rabbi Yisrael of the city of Bar, drew close to the Baal Shem Tov in the year 5510 (1750).[1]

He served as rabbi of the Chassidic community in the city of Bar.

Together with the Baal Shem Tov, he worked to avert the evil decree of the "burning of the Talmud," and they were indeed successful in doing so.

He passed away on the 21st of Nissan, 5559 (1799). Some say he passed away in the year 5560 (1800).[2]

His son-in-law was Rabbi Mordechai of Chernobyl.[3] Accordingly, the Rebbes of the Chassidic dynasties of Karów, Trisk, Talna, Skver, and Rachmistrivka are among his descendants.

In his first marriage, Rabbi Mordechai was wed to the daughter of Rabbi Aharon HaGadol of Karlin; from that union was born Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael of Tcherkass, who was a son-in-law of the Mitteler Rebbe and a father-in-law of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak of Ovruch, who was the grandfather of the Rebbe Rayatz.
