His maternal grandfather, Rabbi Mendel Leib Levine, was a Chassid Chabad and that is what gave him his intial feelings for Chabad. Before leaving for war, at the request of his mother, he went to Rebbe Rayatz to receive a blessing from him. The Rebbe Rayatz, as he told other soldiers at the time, told him to make sure to put on Tefillin and handed him a dime.
