Kafal - Doubling

kafal (doubling) is when something specific repeats itself multiple times, whether it's a number, object, or blessing. This doubling can occur multiple times, even infinitely.

"kafal" is connected to and indicates the concept of geulah, as brought in the midrash: "five letters are doubled, and all relate to redemption. chaf-chaf through which avraham avinu was redeemed from ur kasdim, as it says: lech lecha from your land. mem-mem through which yitzchak avinu was redeemed from the philistines, as it says: go away from us for you have become much stronger than us. nun-nun through which yaakov avinu was redeemed from esav, as it says: save me please. pei-pei through which israel was redeemed from egypt, as it says: pakod pakadti (i have surely remembered). tzadi-tzadi through which the holy one, blessed be he, will redeem israel at the end of the fourth kingdom, as it says: a man named tzemach (sprout) and under him will sprout."

this is also alluded to in the verse: "kiflayim l'tushiya" (double for wisdom) – "tushiya" also means salvation = redemption, indicating the limitless "new torah that will come forth from me" that will exist in the time of geulah.

the rebbe explains the connection between doubling and redemption: doubling is the multiplication of something multiple times, many times, even to infinity. therefore, the concept of doubling relates to geulah because then the infinite ein sof light will be revealed.

the rebbe maharash explains that doubling is the level of binah (understanding), which is the aspect of sovev kol almin (encompassing all worlds), where external forces have no grasp or nourishment, and therefore this is an aspect of redemption.

the doubled hei in the name of havaya

in the milui ban of the filled forms of the name of havaya, the filling of the letter hei is with an additional hei.

it is explained in chassidic teachings that the upper hei and lower hei are actually very different: the hei represents length, width, and expansion, and the upper length and width cannot directly flow downward. rather, it must first be constricted through the letter vav of the name of havaya, and then it can flow downward, from which the lower hei is formed.

but this lower hei does not have the revelation of the upper hei. instead, only a very dim illumination shines within it.
