Rebbetzin Shifra (daughter-in-law of the Alter Rebbe)
Rebbetzin Shifra was a daughter-in-law of the Alter Rebbe.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Shifra was born to Rabbi Tzvi Hirsh of Olle, the town's rabbi and one of the Alter Rebbe's foremost chassidim. She was born around 5544 (1784).
On Chanukah 5558 (December 1797) she married Rabbi Moshe, son of the Alter Rebbe. At the wedding the Alter Rebbe delivered the maamar (Chassidic discourse) beginning with the verse V'eirastich li l'olam — "I will betroth you to Me forever."[1]
After the wedding the couple settled in Olle, where her husband served as rabbi.
After her husband went into exile — escaping from his captors on 19 Kislev 5576 (December 1, 1815) — Rebbetzin Shifra emigrated to the Holy Land together with her children, at the direction of the Tzemach Tzedek.[2] She settled in Hebron and after several years relocated to Jerusalem.[3]
She passed away on 7 Tevet 5609 (January 2, 1849) in Jerusalem and is buried on the Mount of Olives.
