Born around 1883 - Passed away 7 Shevat 1926

Uncle of the Rebbe (brother of Reb Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, the Rebbe's father).

Life History[edit | edit source]

Born around 1883 to Reb Baruch Shneur Schneerson and Rebbetzin Zelda Rachel Schneerson. Married Rachel, daughter of the chossid Reb Dovid Tzvi Chen, Rov of Chernigov, and moved to live in his city.

At his wedding in Chernigov in 1909, his brother Reb Levi Yitzchak attended. Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson later recalled an incident where a scholarly misnaged wrote false accusations against Reb Levi Yitzchak to expel him from Yekatrinoslav, claiming he was once in Chernigov and walked without a sirtuk due to intoxication.

In 1911, he became Rov of the agricultural settlement Shiraka (Ingultz near the Ingul River) in Kherson province. His only daughter Shaina Zelda was born on 26 Sivan 1914. After the Bolshevik Revolution, he returned to Chernigov.

In 1925, he moved to Eretz Yisroel with his father-in-law and settled in Yerushalayim.

When Reb Avrohom Yitzchok Kook learned of his outstanding qualities, he sent an enthusiastic letter of recommendation to the people of Chadera to accept him as their Rov. However, before a year passed since his aliyah, he passed away on 7 Shevat 1926. He is buried in the Chabad section of Har Hazeisim in Yerushalayim.

After the funeral and during the year of mourning, his daughter Zelda Mishkovsky (Schneerson) said Kaddish for him, having no other choice.

The Frierdiker Rebbe wrote a letter of consolation to his wife from Leningrad, requesting not to inform his mother Rebbetzin Shterna Sarah for as long as possible to prevent her distress.

The Rebbe said about him that "he was a great boki and lamdan" and had extraordinary kindness.

His wife Rachel passed away on 22 Teves 1965. Their daughter Zelda asked the Rebbe about the text for the matzeiva, to which he replied to mention her father's name - his uncle - (adding that he was from the lineage of the Alter Rebbe), and her father's name (R' Dovid Tzvi).

In 1969, after the Six Day War when Har Hazeisim returned to Jewish control, they located his kever and the Rebbe asked Zelda to arrange rebuilding the matzeiva, offering to participate in the expenses.
