Life History

born in Bialystok in 5659/1899, to his father Rabbi Avraham Yaakov HaCohen. In his youth, he came to Slabodka and was cherished by the heads of the yeshiva. After six years of study, he moved to Eretz Yisrael where he joined a group of yeshiva students in Chevron. Shortly before the massacre of 5689/1929, he entered into marriage with the daughter of R' Chaim Diamant. After his marriage, he left the city for the United States, thereby being saved from the terrible massacre.

Later, he moved to the United States and served as a synagogue rabbi.

In 5700/1940, he lost his source of livelihood. During those days, Rabbi Chodakov met him and appointed him as secretary to the Frierdiker Rebbe (Admu"r Rayatz). He continued this work with the Rebbe with dedication and devotion.

Despite being educated in the "Mussar" school of thought, he greatly appreciated the Rebbe, and included the Rebbe's words to him in his book "Menuchat Eliyahu."

Rabbi Yisrael Zeev Gustman, the head of the Central Tomchei Tmimim Yeshiva, appointed him for a certain period as a Maggid Shiur in Tomchei Tmimim 770.

He was among the initiators and founders of Kollel Tzemach Tzedek and frequently traveled to Eretz Yisrael and visited there.

On 16 Shevat 5713/1953, the Rebbe wrote him a special letter on the occasion of his daughter Yonina's engagement.

When his wife passed away (in 5720/1960), the Rebbe came to comfort the family and prayed the Mincha and Maariv prayers there.

He passed away on Hoshana Rabba 5735/1975. The Rebbe went out with a group of chassidim to participate in the funeral.
