The melody arrived at 770 through the family of Yaakov Yehuda Hecht, originally called "Bobbe Sotschi's Nigun."

Originally, the tune was sung with the words: Chayalei Adoneinu Moreinu V'Rabbeinu, Chayalei (HaRebbe) Moshiach Tzidkeinu. Hu Yolicheinu B'tankim L'artzeinu Im HaMivtza'im V'haNaSHaK B'yadeinu, Yavo V'yigaleinu.

These words were frequently sung at children's gatherings in the Rebbe's presence, as well as at farbrengens and during Kos Shel Bracha. They received the Rebbe's vigorous encouragement many times until Simchas Torah 5745, when there were alarming outcries about the nigun and about the entire matter of publicizing the Moshiach's identity. It is reported that a year later, the gabbaim forgot to change the nigun on the hakafos song sheet to a different one, and when they reached the nigun, they sang it without the words. The Rebbe could be seen straining to hear exactly what was being sung, so there was great caution about this.

Even afterwards, Chassidim continued to sing the nigun in the Rebbe's presence frequently with the words "Yechi Adoneinu Moreinu V'Rabbeinu," repeating them four times.

After 27 Adar, when they began to sing "Yechi" and there was encouragement and satisfaction, they also returned to the nigun "Chayalei Adoneinu." Today it is customary to sing this nigun with the words "Yechi Adoneinu."

Every Friday night at 770 (as was the custom beginning around 5753) and in most Anash communities, it is customary to sing this nigun during the "Lecha Dodi" prayer starting from the section "Lo Sevoshi."

Singing "Yechi" with this melody after the Lecha Dodi prayer received the Rebbe's encouragement during prayers held on Shabbos evenings near his holy room in a small minyan during the period after 27 Adar 5752.

This nigun is number 181 in the Mesoras HaNigunim project.
