Amira L'Nochri (Hebrew: אמירה לנכרי, lit. "Instructing a Non-Jew") is a halachic compendium that collects all the rulings in the Shulchan Aruch HaRav pertaining to the practice of asking a non-Jew to perform a prohibited act on Shabbos, accompanied by source references and annotations.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The laws governing what a Jew may and may not ask a non-Jew to do on Shabbos represent one of the more intricate areas of Hilchos Shabbos (the laws of Shabbos). The relevant material is scattered across many tractates of the Talmud, the works of the medieval and later halachic authorities, and throughout the Shulchan Aruch itself.

The Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, invested considerable effort in clarifying these laws in a thorough and practically applicable manner. In certain instances his final rulings, recorded in his later revision of the Shulchan Aruch (known as the Mahadura Basra, or "later edition"), represent a departure from positions he had held in his earlier text.

The volume is distinctive in that it draws together, for the first time in a single place, every ruling on this subject found across the Alter Rebbe's Shulchan Aruch HaRav — including the supplementary glosses gathered in the Kuntres Acharon (the "Final Pamphlet," a collection of deeper analytical notes appended to the Shulchan Aruch). The editors also added a division into chapters and sub-sections, marginal source references, cross-references, annotations, and analytical discussions.

Compilation[edit | edit source]

The halachic material was compiled by the editors of the new critical edition of the Shulchan Aruch HaRav: Rabbi Shalom Dovber Levin, Rabbi Yitzchak Wilhelm, and Rabbi Avraham Elashvili.

The book was published in 5767 (2007) by Karnei Hod Torah and Otzar HaChassidim.
