Rebbetzin Brachah Cohen was the fifth daughter of the Mitteler Rebbe.

Life

Rebbetzin Brachah was born between 1794 and 1798 (5554–5558)[1] to her father the Mitteler Rebbe and her mother Rebbetzin Sheina.

On 14 Shevat 5568 (February 1808), she married the Chassid Rabbi Yonah HaKohen of Zhytomyr.[2]

At the wedding and during the Sheva Brachos — the seven festive meals celebrated in the week following a Jewish wedding — the Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi) delivered numerous maamarim (formal Chassidic discourses).[3]

Throughout her life, Rebbetzin Brachah resided in the town of Lubavitch.

Family

  • Her son, Boruch Shmuel Zanvil Cohen, passed away on 6 Elul 5646 (1886).[4] His daughter, Marat Sheina, passed away on 24 Shevat 5631 (1871).[5]
  • Her son, Dovber Cohen, appears in the Zhytomyr registry of 1850 (5610).

Notes

  1. Rebbetzin Devorah Leah, who was born before Rebbetzin Brachah, was born after the passing of Devorah Leah (daughter of the Alter Rebbe) in 1793 (5553) — she was named after her. Rebbetzin Menuchah Rochel, who was born after Rebbetzin Brachah, was born at the beginning of 1799 (5559). It therefore follows that Rebbetzin Brachah was born between 5554 and 5558 (1794–1798).
  2. An examination of the Zhytomyr census records of 1811, 1816, and 1834 reveals the existence of a Rabbi Yonah, son of Rabbi Shmuel Zanvil (son of Yosef and Pesya, daughter of Yaakov) and Hinde, daughter of Rabbi Yonah. He was born in 1802 (5562) and married a Beila, daughter of Rabbi Dovber, born in 1804 (5564). Their children were Yaakov and Hinde. Based on the name of his son Boruch-Shmuel-Zanvil, it may be surmised that this is the same individual — and if so, he was married to Beila, a sister of Brachah. His marriage to Beila would have taken place in 1822 (5582), the year in which a daughter of the Mitteler Rebbe — whose name had until recently been unknown — was indeed married.
