'''Rabbi Leibel Groner's Testimony:'''
'''Narrator:'''
Rabbi Bernhard became a Lubavitcher Chossid. He had a close relationship with the Rebbe.
'''Rabbi Leibel Groner:'''
In the 5750s [1990s], I think, when he was visiting New York, he comes into the office—we were very friendly, very close—and he says:
'''Rabbi Bernhard:'''
Leibel, you have to do me a favor.
'''Rabbi Leibel Groner:'''
I said: What is it?
'''Rabbi Bernhard:'''
If you remember Simchas Torah 5746 [1985], a young man got up [by the farbrengen], and said: The Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach, and the Rebbe became very serious, and he told Rabbi Chodakov: “If they mention it again, I'm going away from here.”
So the Rebbe was so against mentioning him [as Moshiach], and now I see that people are writing about it, and I don't see that the Rebbe is, so to say, negating it in any way.
'''Rabbi Leibel Groner:'''
So I told Rabbi Bernhard: You know what, write a letter to the Rebbe and we'll hear what the Rebbe answers.
So he sat down in the office, and he wrote a letter, and he asked the Rebbe.
The Rebbe wrote: If it’s a place where it could be accepted...
I was silent — implying that the Rebbe meant that in such a case, it’s okay.
But the Rebbe also wrote: if as a result of this, people will distance themselves from Chassidus—not to mention it.
In other words, if it’s a place where it’s accepted — I understood from the Rebbe’s words that he was permitting it.
Then I get a phone call from '''N'shei Chabad of Jerusalem''', and there are two women on the phone.
'''N'shei Chabad of Jerusalem:'''
We had over here a very difficult discussion, whether we're allowed to go out and encourage people to sign that the Rebbe is Melech HaMoshiach.
Some say: Being that the Rebbe speaks a lot about Moshiach—we have to do it.
And some say: Being that the Rebbe said that if you're gonna push this concept, that's going to draw people away from Chassidus—we don’t think it's a proper thing.
We want to know what to do.
'''Rabbi Leibel Groner:'''
So I told them: Each one of you write a letter to the Rebbe, fax it to me, and I'll take in the two letters to the Rebbe.
When the faxes came, I told the Rebbe: These are two letters from two divisions of the N'shei Chabad about the same subject.
The Rebbe takes the first letter—the one in which the people said that in order to bring Moshiach closer, we have to get more people to believe that the Rebbe is Moshiach—and they wrote that whole thing and asked the Rebbe what to do.
The Rebbe turned over the page and wrote: "It should be with success, and I will mention it at the Tzion [Ohel of the Previous Rebbe]."
Then the Rebbe picked up the second letter, where they wrote that as a result of this, people may stay away from Chassidus.
The Rebbe said: “Where’s the first letter?”
So the Rebbe had both letters on the table.
About the first letter—the one he had written “It should be with success”—the Rebbe said: “This answer you should give over.”
About the second letter, where they wrote they’re hesitant, the Rebbe said: “Put this in my bag, I will take it to the Ohel.”
'''Rabbi Leibel Groner (conclusion):'''
So if you want to interpret that as clear words that the Rebbe agreed to say about him that he’s Melech HaMoshiach — in both areas —
This is what he told Rabbi Bernhard: In an acceptable manner, it’s ok.
And over here, it was very clear, that those people that said they want to go around and have people sign that the Rebbe is Moshiach — the Rebbe said to them: “It should be with success!”
