Rabbi Schneur Schneersohn was the son of Rabbi Menachem Nachum (son of the Mitteler Rebbe).
When he came of age, he married in his first marriage Rebbetzin Rada Freida, daughter of the Rebbe the Tzemach Tzedek.
His wife passed away at a young age. After her passing, he married Rebbetzin Golda Schneersohn, daughter of Rabbi Baruch Shalom Schneersohn.
He is buried with honor in Lubavitch. In the year 5780 (2020), his grave was found in proximity to the ohel of the Rebbe Tzemach Tzedek and the Maharash. After renovating the grave, it was returned to its proper place.

Children from his first marriage:
- Mrs. Fruma Zuckerman, wife of Rabbi Binyamin Zuckerman of Mohilev. She was raised in the home of her grandfather "the Tzemach Tzedek" after the death of her mother Rada Freida, daughter of the Rebbe Tzemach Tzedek, in her childhood.
- Shneur Zalman Yitzchak Wolshanik, son-in-law of Rabbi Binyamin Zuckerman
- Mrs. Chava Esther (Chaya Eta) Berlin, wife of Rabbi Chaim Yeshaya Berlin of Riga, a famous chassid and philanthropist. Both passed away without children.
- Mrs. Rivka Zlata Levin, wife of Rabbi Moshe Eliezer Levin.
Children from his second marriage:
- The great Rabbi Yehuda Leib Schneersohn who was a rabbi in Velizh - father of the genius Rabbi Shneur Zalman Schneersohn - (Rabbi Zalman of Velizh).
