A hanacha by R' Moshe, son of the Alter Rebbe

Maamarei Admur HaZakein is the central series (approximately 23 volumes)[1] of maamarim — Chassidic discourses — by the Alter Rebbe, comprising all of his discourses that have come down to us, aside from those previously printed in Torah Ohr and Likkutei Torah.

The series began publication by Kehot Publication Society under the leadership of the Rebbe in 1958.

A maamar is a formal Chassidic discourse — a structured, often deep exposition of a verse or concept from Torah, delivered orally by a Rebbe and subsequently transcribed. Such transcriptions are called hanachos (singular: hanacha), and their fidelity varied greatly depending on the transcriber.

Volumes in the Series

Maamarei Admur HaZakein — Hanachos HaR"P

This volume contains the hanachos of Rabbi Pinchas Reizes, who was renowned for his precision and endeavored to record the Alter Rebbe's discourses word for word. Published in 1958, edited by the Rebbe. Additional editions: 1958 (second edition), 1984.

Maamarei Admur HaZakein — Eshalech Liazhna

Printed from a manuscript scroll[2] containing discourses delivered by the Alter Rebbe in Liozna — known as "Eshalech" after the opening words of the first discourse in the manuscript, the discourse beginning Eshalech Lifnei Hashem b'Artzos HaChayyim — spanning the years 1796–1802.[3] Published in 1958, edited by the Rebbe.

In 1982, a supplementary pamphlet to this volume was published.

Maamarei Admur HaZakein — 5567

In advance of 14 Kislev 2023, the hanachos of R' Moshe, son of the Alter Rebbe, from the discourses Maheira Yishama, Ki Al Kol Kavod Chuppah, and Keitzad Merakdin, along with a commentary on the above, were published for the first time in a special pamphlet by Kehot Publication Society.[8]

Sefer HaMaamarim — 5569

Compiled from various transcribers. One discourse is preserved in the handwriting of the Mitteler Rebbe and appears in the volume. Published by directive of the Rebbe in 1981.

Maamarei Admur HaZakein — 5570

Published in 1981. In 1987 a supplementary pamphlet was issued, and that same year the volume was reprinted in a new edition incorporating the additions from that pamphlet.

Maamarei Admur HaZakein — HaKetzarim

Contains shorter discourses whose style suggests they were delivered by the Alter Rebbe in the early period of his leadership, before his arrest — referred to as "before Petersburg."[11] Published in 1981, edited by Rabbi Shalom Dovber Levin, with an additional edition in 1987.
