Rebbes of Chabad Portal

Throughout Jewish History, the Jewish People have always had a leader. A singular individual entrusted with the Spiritual and physical wellbeing of the Jewish People, their head both spiritually and figuratively. From the times of Moses through Kings David and Solomon until today there has always been a solitary figure who is called the Leader of the Generation (Nasi HaDor) From the times of the Baal Shem Tov, the Leader of the Generation, also called the Rebbe, has been tasked not only with ensuring the welfare of the Jewish people, but also in revealing the internal, hidden aspect of the Torah (Pnimiyut HaTorah or Chassidus) to the Jewish People and the world at large.

The Baal Shem Tov was succeeded by his foremost student, Rabbi DovBer of Mezritch, whose student the Alter Rebbe founded the school of thought known as Chassidus Chabad. Starting a dynasty of 7 generations until today with the last of the Rebbeim being Our Rebbe.

The Rebbe’s followers (Chassidim) relate to the Rebbe in a way of absolute belief and devotion, their service of G-d is guided by the Rebbe, their focus in Torah learning is directed by the Rebbe. They involve themselves in his initiatives and they pay special attention to his actions and affairs. The Rebbe is the central figure in the history and culture of Chassidus.

Chassidim connect to the Rebbe not by just believing in him and being in his presence, but also by asking his advice in personal matters, following his instructions, requesting his blessing and delving into his teachings both in Toras HaChassidus and in Toras HaNigla. With an emphasis on his Chassidic Discourses {Maamarim) and abbreviated talks (Sichos).

The primary role of the Rebbe is strengthening Chassidus and its institutions as well as guiding his followers, and also spreading the influence of Chassidus to all streams of Judaism. In addition to all this, the Rebbe maintains his function as the leader of the Jewish People and concerns himself with the general issues affecting the Jewish people; Learning Torah, Doing Mitzvot and Jewish Education.

The Alter Rebbe

Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi (the Alter Rebbe) - The founder of Chassidus Chabad and the first of the Seven Rebbes of Chabad,also known as the "Baal HaTanya" or "HaRav". The Alter Rebbe authored the Tanya, the Shulchan Aruch HaRav, as well as other works of Chassidus published after his passing. Born on the 18th of Elul 5505 in the city of Liozna, in the Mogilev region of Tsarist Russia (modern-day Belarus), to Rabbi Baruch, a student of the Baal Shem Tov and a descendent of the Maharal of Prague and passed away on the 24th of Tevet 5573.

The Mitteler Rebbe

Rabbi Dovber Schneuri of Lubavitch (the Mitteler Rebbe) - the second of the Seven Rebbes of Chabad, was the son and successor of the Alter Rebbe, the founder of Chabad Chassidus. The Mitteler Rebbe authored many works Chassidus published during his lifetime and after his passing. He oversaw the relocation of the Chabad movement to the city of Lubavitch from Liadi. He was the uncle and father-in-law of the Tzemach Tzedek who became the third Rebbe of Chabad. Born on Tes Kislev (9 Elul) 5534 and passed away on Tes Kislev 5588. He is buried in the city of Niezhin in Chernigov, Ukraine.

The Tzemach Tzedek

Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn of Lubavitch also known as "The Tzemach Tzedek" is the third Rebbe of Chabad. The grandson of the Alter Rebbe and son in law of the Mitteler Rebbe. Born on Erev Rosh Hashana 5549 in Liadi and passed away 13th of Nissan 5620 in Lubavitch. He is buried in Lubavitch, Russia.

The Rebbe Maharash

Rabbi Shmuel Schneersohn of Lubavitch also known as the "Rebbe Maharash"-The fourth Rebbe of Chabad and the youngest son of the Tzemach Tzedek. Born on the 2nd of Iyar 5594 in Lubavitch. The Rebbe Maharash is known for the saying and philosophy of "L'chatchila Ariber". He passed away on the 13th of Tishrei 5643 and is buried next to his father in Lubavitch.

The Rebbe Rashab

Rabbi Shalom DovBer Schneersohn also known as the "Rebbe Rashab" -the fifth Rebbe of Chabad and the son of the Rebbe Maharash was born on 20th of Cheshvan 5621 in Lubavitch. The Rebbe Rashab is known for founding the Yeshiva Tomchei Temimim as well as several other Chabad Yeshivos around the world. The Rebbe Rashab is also renowned for his revolutionary system of understanding and teaching Chassidus in an organized manner. The Rebbe Rashab passed away on the 2nd of Nissan 5680 and is buried in Rostov on Don, Russia.

The Rebbe Rayatz

Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn known as the "Rebbe Rayatz" or the "Friediker Rebbe" (previous Rebbe) - the sixth Rebbe of Chabad and the son of the Rebbe Rashab. He was born on the 12th of Tammuz 5640 in Lubavitch. The Rebbe Rayatz brought Chabad Lubavitch to America after escaping the horrors of the Holocaust. The Rebbe Rayatz passed away on the 10th of Shevat 5710 and is buried in Old Montefiore Cemetery in Queens, NY.

The Rebbe

Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson also known as "The Lubavitcher Rebbe" or just "The Rebbe" Melech Hamoshiach is the seventh and current Rebbe of Chabad and the leader of our generation. The Rebbe was born on the 11th of Nissan 5662 to Rabbi Levi Yitzchak and Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson in Nikolaev, Ukraine. The Rebbe is the son in law of the Rebbe Rayatz and the great-great-great grandson of the Rebbe the Tzemach Tzedek.
