During WWII, he served in the Red Army fighting against the Nazis with distinction. After killing a large group of Nazi officers, he was promoted. He later explained he enlisted to avenge his family murdered by the Nazis. After the war, he fled the army and participated in the 1946 exodus from Russia. In a DP camp in Italy, he met Reb Zusha Wilmovsky and Reb Yaakov Plass. Reb Zalman brought them closer to Chabad and together they strengthened the refugees. They later immigrated to Eretz Yisroel on 23 Adar II 1946.
