Torah is the general term for G-d’s wisdom that was given to the Jewish People and the world at large through Moshe Rabbeinu on Mount Sinai. Torah is comprised of both the Written Torah - The Five Books of Moses, the books of the Prophets, and Scriptures; and the Oral Torah - The tradition that was passed down from generation to generation starting from Moshe giving it over to Yehoshua etc. including the Mishnah, Talmud and even the novellae and commentaries on them.

G-d created the world using the wisdom of the Torah and as such He gave us the Torah as a guide for humanity to fulfill His Divine will and connect to Him. Torah is divided into two fundamental dimensions: The external aspect - Toras Hanigla and the internal aspect - Pnimiyus HaTorah; Kabbalah and Chassidus.

In the works of Kabbalah and Chassidus in General, and specifically in the Chassidus of Chabad, there is a special emphasis on learning the revealed aspect of Torah. Being that it is the wisdom of G-d, and learning the reasons for Halachos the way they are explained in Nigla is a very special way to connect with Him. This allows a person to connect his intellect and thoughts with G-d in so far as thinking and delving deeply into G-d’s wisdom is connecting with G-d since He and His wisdom are one and the same. Therefore, The Chassidic Masters emphasize the obligation to learn Torah “Lishma” in the name of G-d in order to connect to him and in a state of holiness and with seriousness and dedication and humility.

It is incumbent upon every Jew, no matter his spiritual state, to fulfill his obligation of learning Torah. According to what’s written “And you shall contemplate It day and night.” The Mitzvah of learning Torah is equivalent to all of the other mitzvos.
