Since the creation of the world, all of humanity spoke Lashon HaKodesh, until the events of the Tower of Babel, after which Hashem confused the language of all the earth.

== The Essence of the Language ==
The language is composed of the letters of the Torah which are from Heaven, and they are called Lashon HaKodesh because they are drawn from the level of the supreme holiness. In contrast, there are languages called 'conventional languages' which are composed of foreign letters that humans created, and these are mundane languages - foreign tongues.

== The Use of Lashon HaKodesh ==
[[The Rebbe Rayatz]] came out strongly against using Lashon HaKodesh as a mundane language, and compared this to studying Torah for the sake of wisdom without Godliness. The Rebbe Rayatz also writes in the name of the Rebbe Rashab, that in one of his holy letters regarding speaking in Lashon HaKodesh, he proves based on foundations from both the revealed and hidden parts of Torah, that speaking in the holy language about mundane matters is forbidden, and he continues to say, "Consider that in the language in which Hashem said 'I am Hashem your G-d,' people speak all manner of despised and forbidden things."

On the other hand, once the Rebbe spoke about a certain matter regarding the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) and quoted what they said about soldiers lacking morale. The Rebbe remarked that he didn't understand why they use a foreign word instead of using an expression in Lashon HaKodesh like "matzav ruach" (state of mind) and similar terms.
