== How He Drew Close to the Baal Shem Tov ==
The story of how he came close to the [[Baal Shem Tov]] is told as follows.

He had set out to collect his Chanukah money, and lost his way. By evening he found himself at the door of the Baal Shem Tov's home. He asked the Rebbetzin where her husband was, and she replied that he had gone to the innkeeper to help water the animals. Rabbi Dovid asked whether there was anything at all to eat. She answered: "My husband slaughtered a chicken — look at the knife, and if it seems right to you, I will cook it." He examined the knife and found it to be fine. The Rebbetzin went and informed her husband, who came home — but made himself appear as though he had just come from the innkeeper. He served Rabbi Dovid as a lesser man serves one greater, himself laying out the bed, setting out water and a washbasin, and then he and his wife slept as simple country folk do.

At midnight the Baal Shem Tov rose — he would sleep only two hours — and seated himself quietly at the base of the stove, engaged in his private devotions.<ref>He would sleep only two hours (''Shivchei HaBaal Shem Tov'', ibid.).</ref> Rabbi Dovid, the aforementioned maggid meisharim, awoke and saw a great light beneath the stove. Thinking that the wooden beams above the stove had caught fire, he began shaking his wife: "Chana, Chana — there is fire burning at the stove!" She replied: "I am a woman — by the time I dress myself and cover my head, the fire will grow stronger, G‑d forbid. Let the Rav forgive me — he has water beside him, let him put it out."

Rabbi Dovid took the washbasin and went to extinguish the fire. When he reached the stove he saw that the Baal Shem Tov was sitting there, and a light was shining upon him. The rabbi of our community later told him privately that the light stood over the Baal Shem Tov like a rainbow. At the sight of it, the maggid meisharim fainted. Chana was compelled to rouse the Baal Shem Tov and draw him out of his state of devotion so that he could revive the maggid meisharim from his faint.

In the morning, Rabbi Dovid said: "This is what I saw — tell me what it means." The Baal Shem Tov replied: "I do not know. I was reciting Psalms — perhaps I cleaved to the Blessed One, and this is the meaning of the fire." Rabbi Dovid pressed him under oath, and the Baal Shem Tov revealed himself. From that day forward, Rabbi Dovid traveled to him regularly to hear Torah from him. When his colleagues heard the Torah he brought back and asked where he had received it, he would answer: "From a certain poor and humble man."

From then on, whenever Rabbi Dovid heard Rabbi [[Gershon of Kitov]] rebuking the Baal Shem Tov with sharp words, he would say to him: "Leave him be — he is wiser than all of you." But more than that he could not say, for the Baal Shem Tov had bound him by oath not to reveal what he knew.<ref>[http://www.daat.ac.il/daat/history/shivhey/4-2.htm ''Shivchei HaBaal Shem Tov''].</ref>
