In the Gemara, the Amoraim disagree whether "Mitzvos will be nullified in the future to come." According to Rabbi Yochanan, the Mitzvos will be nullified in the future to come, and according to Rav Yanai, they will not. Among Halachic authorities, Rabbi Yochanan's view that Mitzvos will be nullified in the future was accepted. Nevertheless, many great Jewish scholars struggled with its explanation and its reconciliation with the fundamental principle that the Torah and Mitzvos are never nullified, as well as with defining the exact time and type for the nullification of Mitzvos.

Chassidic teachings also address this issue and explain that the Mitzvos in their essence are never nullified. There are only different layers in the meaning of the nullification of Mitzvos, or a relative nullification in the level of G-dliness drawn down through the Mitzvos, or the nullification of the command but not the nullification of the Mitzvah itself.
