Editing Kiddushin

Mesechtas Kiddushin, part of Seder Nashim, contains 4 chapters and 81 pages.

The tractate deals with the laws of kiddushin (betrothal) and lineage. Kiddushin is the acquisition of marriage, where the woman becomes betrothed to her husband for all matters of marriage.

This tractate is one of the Gemara tractates studied in Chabad yeshivos.

==== Doubtful Kiddushin ====
When a person betroths five women by saying "one of you is betrothed to me," all of them are considered doubtfully betrothed since it is unknown which one was betrothed.

In this law, there are two possible understandings:

# There is doubt in reality, because indeed only one of them is betrothed and the others are not betrothed at all.
# The status of doubt applies legally to each of them, where each one has the laws of doubtful kiddushin.

It seems more reasonable to learn according to the second approach, because since he did not intend his kiddushin for any specific one of them, what logic would there be to say that specifically one is betrothed and the other is not?

However, the Tzemach Tzedek is uncertain about this, since there are various proofs supporting the first approach.

The Tzemach Tzedek suggests that it may depend on the situation: In a case where he betrothed one of five women, where there is a possibility for the kiddushin to take effect with each of them, then indeed doubtful kiddushin applies to all of them. However, in a case where he betrothed one of two sisters, where it's impossible for kiddushin to take effect with both, then indeed the kiddushin only takes effect with one of them.
