Levi Yitzchak Schneerson (HaKatan)

R' Levi Yitzchak Schneerson (nicknamed "HaKatan" [the small one] to distinguish him from his cousin Rabbi Levi Yitzchak, father of the Rebbe; 5659 [1899] – 5 Adar Sheni 5703 [1943]), was the son of Rabbi Avraham Schneerson (son of R' Levi Yitzchak) who served as rabbi in Repka and Chernigov.

Life HistoryEdit

Born in 5659 [1899] in Podbranka.

He served as a shochet and worked to maintain Jewish life in Russia.

On 17 Adar 5699 [1939], he was arrested together with his uncle Menachem Mendel Schneerson who passed away en route, and he himself was exiled to Chili for 5 years, where he met his cousin - Rabbi Levi Yitzchak, who was also exiled there.

He passed away on 5 Adar Sheni 5703 [1943], about a year before his release, and his cousin arranged a proper Jewish burial for him according to halacha.

R' Levi Yitzchak was the uncle of R' Shalom Ber Butman, who was a member of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson's household (great-grandson of the Admor Tzemach Tzedek).

FamilyEdit

  • His daughter Mrs. Margolia Schneerson - lived in Chernigov, passed away in 5771 [2011].
  • His son, R' Avraham Schneerson - born in 5682 [1922], went missing during World War II.
