Kohanim

The Kohanim are the descendants of Aharon HaKohen who were chosen from the tribe of Levi to perform the service in the Beis HaMikdash.

Hierarchical StructureEdit

Among the Kohanim themselves, there were three levels:

  • Kohen Hedyot (regular Kohen)
  • Segan Kohen Gadol (deputy High Priest)
  • Kohen Gadol (High Priest)

Various Tanaim served in these positions. For example, Rabbi Yishmael Kohen Gadol, who was among the Asara Harugei Malchus (Ten Martyrs), Rabbi Chanina Segan HaKohanim who served as deputy to the Kohen Gadol, and others.

Spiritual SignificanceEdit

The Rambam writes that similar to Shevet Levi, any person can reach this level by separating themselves from worldly matters and dedicating themselves completely to Hashem. The Rebbe innovates, contrary to common understanding, that this insight of the Rambam applies also to the level of Kohanim who were separated even from among the Leviim, and even to the level of Kohen Gadol.
