Detroit

The city Detroit is the largest in the state of Michigan in the United States.

In the year 5690 (1930), the Rebbe Rayatz made a visit to the city. During that visit, approximately 500 Jews came to the train station to greet the Rebbe. The Rebbe visited the place and inspired the community with words of Torah.

In the year 5718 (1958), the Rebbe sent Rabbi Sholom Dovber Shemtov to serve as a shliach (emissary) in the area, and this was the first city to which the Rebbe sent a shliach in the United States.

Over the years, a cheder al taharas hakodesh for boys and girls, a summer camp, a yeshiva, and additional institutions were established in the area.

Among the prominent figures in the community is Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Gurary, mashpia (spiritual mentor) of the Chabad Yeshiva in Oak Park and the community.

The city is known for its large Chabad community.
