Rabbi Avrohom Osdoba (born 5695, 1935) is a rav and member of the Badatz in Shchunas HaMelech Crown Heights - "Kan Tziva Hashem es HaBracha" and a Rosh Mesivta in the Central Tomchei Tmimim. He was appointed by the Rebbe on Shemini Atzeres 5731 as "Baal Habayis" over the country of Denmark.

Life History[edit | edit source]

Born on 2nd of Sivan 5695 to his father Rabbi Sholom Zalle and Mrs. Sarah. His family were Gerrer chassidim but were close to Chabad chassidus.

While still a child, he entered yechidus with his father by the The Rebbe Rayatz. Later he merited another yechidus.

In his youth, he learned in Yeshivas Tomchei Tmimim Bronx under Rabbi Mordechai Dov Altein, and through his learning in the yeshiva became a Chabad chassid.

Later he learned in the Central Tomchei Tmimim at 770 between the years 5706 to 5719.

During the Frierdiker Rebbe's farbrengens, he would sit together with the yeshiva students to hear the farbrengen through a speaker in the zal at 770. At the end of the farbrengen they would pass before the Frierdiker Rebbe.

At the Rebbe's direction, he traveled to learn in Eretz HaKodesh and on the way stopped for a period in England, France and Switzerland where he met with gedolei Torah from different circles.

In Eretz HaKodesh he married Mrs. Chaya Bluma, daughter of Rabbi Yosef Goldberg, Rosh Yeshiva of Tomchei Tmimim Brunoy.

Afterwards he was sent by the Rebbe to serve as a rav moreh horaah in Denmark, and when the Rebbe established the Chassidic UN, he was appointed by the Rebbe as "Baal Habayis" over Denmark.

After several years, he was called to serve on the spiritual staff of Yeshivas Tomchei Tmimim Morristown, where he served for three years as a Rosh Mesivta, and afterwards was appointed as Rosh Mesivta and member of the administration of the Central Tomchei Tmimim 770.

In the elections held in 5746 for the position of members of the Beis Din Tzedek Crown Heights, he was elected to serve as rav together with Rabbi Yehuda Kalman Marlow, and merited the Rebbe's encouragement who took pains through many responses and instructions to strengthen the status of the members of the Beis Din in Crown Heights.

Halachic Rulings[edit | edit source]

  • Permission to drink water without filtering in Brooklyn, contrary to the opinion of most area rabbonim and other members of the Beis Din Tzedek Crown Heights who forbid this, due to concern about parts of worms found in the water
  • Permission to rely on the time of large stars' appearance, in laws that require waiting until small stars' appearance, with the reasoning that in our times clocks allow precise time calculation
  • To say the 'korbanos' of Mincha prayer before half an hour passes after chatzos and thereby begin praying Mincha exactly on time
