Rabbi '''Yehuda Smotkin''' was a Chabad chossid who lived in Tel Aviv. He was involved in the book trade and served as the Frierdiker Rebbe's representative for all matters concerning the Lubavitch library in Eretz Yisroel.

== Life History ==
Born in Warsaw, Poland to Rabbi Shneur Zalman Smotkin, who was a wealthy book merchant and managed the Warsaw branch of Yeshivas Tomchei Tmimim.

In his youth, he made aliyah to Eretz Yisroel in 1920 with his grandfather Rabbi DovBer Moshe Smotkin. He studied at Yeshivas Toras Emes in Yerushalayim. Afterwards, he began working in orchards near Tel Aviv for parnossa, staying with his uncle R' Yosef Smotkin who lived in Tel Aviv. Every night after returning from work, he would quickly go to sleep, wake up at 2 AM, and sit in the Nachalas Binyamin shul learning Chassidus until davening time, after which he would go to work.

In letters from Rebbetzin Shterna Sarah Schneerson, mother of the Frierdiker Rebbe, she would write to R' Yehuda referring to him as "my relative" (apparently through his mother, Mrs. Leah Reizel, who was a granddaughter of R' Shlomo Chaim Perlov of Koidanov, whose family had marriage connections with Beis HaRav).

== Book Merchant ==
After his marriage to Feigel, daughter of Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Leib Kapilevitch, he lived briefly in Petach Tikva and began taking interest in the book trade which he inherited from his father. During this time, he developed a close connection with the chossid R' Avraham Pariz, who would transfer funds to him through which he would purchase ancient seforim and rare Jewish books, and would send them to the Frierdiker Rebbe's library.

The Frierdiker Rebbe greatly appreciated his efforts in acquiring and sending the seforim, and thanked him through lengthy, content-rich thank you letters. The letters addressed to him later became foundational in Chassidic guidance, and some were even quoted by the Rebbe in his sefer HaYom Yom. For example, the saying that appears on 21 Shevat "It is the duty of Chassidic women and girls to stand in the front line of every enterprise strengthening religion and Yiddishkeit in general" is a sentence from the Frierdiker Rebbe's letter addressed to him, in which the Rebbe strengthens him regarding the union of Chassidic daughters in Eretz Yisroel in general and in his city of Petach Tikva in particular, to read the holy sichos and Chassidic stories.

During his time in Petach Tikva, the Frierdiker Rebbe instructed him to be a member of the city's Chevra Kadisha but not to take part in actual burials.

== Tel Aviv Period ==
In 1937, he moved to Tel Aviv and opened a store on Allenby Street, later moving to live near it on the same street. In response to his notification to the Frierdiker Rebbe about opening the store, the Frierdiker Rebbe sent him a blessing letter thanking him again for his care in sending books and pamphlets to the Lubavitch library, and blessed him with abundant parnossa.

Following the Frierdiker Rebbe's request in 1948 that Kehot Publication Society consider republishing the Sdei Chemed series, the publishing house representatives approached him on behalf of the Rebbe as the inheritor of publishing rights from his father who had purchased them outright. Once permission was granted, Kehot began working on editing the series, and upon completion, Rabbi Smotkin received the Rebbe's thanks for his agreement and was given distribution rights in Eretz Yisroel, receiving a complete set from Kehot.

In 1952, he was among those involved in transferring the body of the Rebbe's brother, Rabbi Yisroel Aryeh Leib Schneerson, from Liverpool, England to the Jewish cemetery in Tzfas. After completing the project, the Rebbe thanked him for his part and asked to know the amount he spent on the matter to reimburse him for his trouble.

In the following years, the Rebbe encouraged him to expand and develop his business in the book trade, writing to him: "It is surprising that you are not expanding the business according to experts' instructions."

Alongside his business dealings, he was heavily involved in spreading the wellsprings of Chassidus throughout the land, and the Chabad newsletter contains many reports of his travels to various settlements and visits to yeshivos throughout the country, where he farbrenged and brought Chassidic ideas to the broader public.

He passed away on 14 Shevat 5742 (1982).

Rabbi Pinchas Hirschprung (1912 - January 1998) was the Chief Rabbi of Montreal, Canada, and the head of the Tomchei Temimim Yeshiva of Montreal.

== Life History ==
Born in the town of Dukla in 1912 to his father, Rabbi Chaim, who was the son-in-law of Rabbi David Tzvi Zahman. He studied Torah with his grandfather and later became a distinguished student of Rabbi Meir Shapiro, the genius of Lublin. During that period, his teacher Rabbi Shapiro testified that he knew 2,200 pages of Talmud by heart.

When he reached bar mitzvah age, he published his first work "Pri Pinchas," and afterward began editing the monthly journal "Ohel Torah," which contained Torah insights from the scholars of his time. Rabbi Shapiro appointed him at that time to test new students who came to study at the Chachmei Lublin Yeshiva where he learned. To serve as an examiner at the yeshiva required vast knowledge. The entrance exam included testing on 400 pages of Talmud with commentaries.

During World War II, he managed to escape the Holocaust. He successfully crossed the border to the Soviet-controlled area in Lithuania. He began a journey to Kobe, Japan through Siberia, and remained in Shanghai. In 1941 he arrived in Canada.

He described his tribulations in his memoirs published in 1935. There he was appointed as Rabbi of the "Adas Yeshurun" community in Montreal and head of the "Mercaz HaTorah" Yeshiva. Later he was appointed director of the Rabbinical Council and head of the Montreal Beit Din, Canada, as well as Chief Rabbi of Canada.

Rabbi Hirschprung was one of the few survivors among Polish rabbis. He was considered one of the greatest experts of our generation in Talmud and Jewish law, which he knew by heart. This was in addition to his sharp understanding in learning, which was expressed in the depth of his sermons and insights. Nevertheless, he was a humble person who took no credit for himself. He pursued peace, was charitable, and was faithfully involved in his community's needs.

The third part of the book Vayoel Moshe written by the Satmar Rebbe was written to him.

== His Connection with the Rebbe ==
He regularly visited the Rebbe to discuss Torah matters and participate in farbrengens. When he wrote his first composition, he sent a letter to the Rebbe. The scholar sent the book "Minchat Solet" on Sefer HaChinuch written by his grandfather to the Rebbe - and the Rebbe responded with notes on the book.

His first meeting with the Rebbe took place in 1957.

When he entered the Rebbe's room, before opening his mouth and giving the Rebbe the Pan, the Rebbe stood up and asked: "Are you the Akiva ben Yosef whose name goes from one end of the world to the other?" After a slight pause, the Rebbe continued and said: "Indeed, you are like Akiva ben Yosef"... When the scholar protested, the Rebbe smiled and asked: "Heaven forbid, why? Isn't this an explicit Talmud?..." Until Rabbi Hirschprung humbly replied: Heaven forbid to say that I am like Akiva ben Yosef...

=== His Torah Study Meeting with the Rebbe ===
Rabbi Hirschprung visited the Rebbe several times. But he couldn't discuss Torah learning with him, since the Rebbe directed the conversation toward spreading Judaism. On this occasion, he asked the Rebbe if he could also discuss some Torah learning with him, despite the Rebbe's precious time, and the Rebbe agreed.

He told the Rebbe that he had several difficult questions which he had asked all the Torah giants, none of whom could answer. Some of them weakened the force of the questions, but he couldn't find someone who could give him true answers to the questions. The Rebbe looked at him warmly and said with surprise: All the geniuses you mentioned cannot answer your questions, and I can? Rabbi Hirschprung answered that he was sure the Rebbe would correctly resolve his difficulties.

The Rebbe nodded and instructed Rabbi Hirschprung to ask. Rabbi Hirschprung asked questions on one of the most difficult topics in the Jerusalem Talmud, but despite this the Rebbe sat in a relaxed manner, until Rabbi Hirschprung wondered if the Rebbe was listening to what he was saying. Had he not heard about the Rebbe's genius, he would have stopped talking, being sure that the Rebbe didn't understand the questions, but knowing about the Rebbe's tremendous genius he continued presenting the questions.

When he finished, the Rebbe said: This is indeed difficult, but it's not the Jerusalem Talmud's fault but your fault, since you didn't learn the topic properly. If you had learned the Jerusalem Talmud properly, you wouldn't have questions. Without opening a book, the Rebbe began lecturing on the Jerusalem Talmud topic as if reading from the book. He showed him that through proper learning, his questions weren't difficult at all, to the surprise of Rabbi Pinchas, who had already presented his questions to the foremost Jewish leaders, none of whom thought there was no basis for his questions. And here the Rebbe, through proper learning of the topic, proved that the question came from an initially misdirected study of the Jerusalem Talmud passage.

The Rabbi later expressed: "I never encountered such depth in learning in my life. I saw giants in my life, but I never met someone approaching the Rebbe in genius."

From then on, his connections with the Rebbe and the Chabad community grew stronger, and in a certain sense he became a Chabad chassid.

=== The Merit of Being at the Rebbe's Farbrengen ===
For some reason, Rabbi Hirschprung was perceived by many as an intellectual follower of the Rebbe, but not emotionally connected. However, this was a mistake.

The scholar would regularly travel to the Rebbe's farbrengens. After the Rebbe's heart attack on Simchat Torah 1977, the scholar was concerned that the Rebbe wouldn't hold a farbrengen on the 19th of Kislev. His joy was indescribable when he learned that the Rebbe would attend the farbrengen after all.

After the farbrengen, on the way home, the scholar couldn't stop talking about the great privilege he had to be present at the Rebbe's farbrengen. He said only a fool could go to sleep after such a farbrengen. "We must go out to the street and dance with joy, that we are worthy to gather with the Rebbe shortly after what happened."

== The Rebbe as Moshiach ==
According to his student [[Rabbi Meir Plotkin]], it was clear to him that the Rebbe is King Moshiach. When he asked his teacher: What did you see in the Rebbe that you didn't see in anyone else? Rabbi Hirschprung replied: There are two things that make the Rebbe unique, and there is no one like him. 1) His [[Torah]] study. 2) Leader of the generation. And I tell you that there is no one like him, not only in our generation but also in previous generations. I was with Rabbi Meir Shapiro in Lublin, with Rabbi Menachem Zemba, and all the geniuses of the previous generation, and I didn't find one who resembles the Rebbe's greatness in all areas of Torah. And it's unnecessary to elaborate on his leadership... He is the only one about whom it can be said that he is presumed to be Moshiach.

In his Shabbat HaGadol sermon after the 27th of Adar 1992, almost half of his sermon revolved around the fact that the head of the Jewish people was ill. He expanded on the topic of the head of the Jewish people, and said that every Jew needs the Rebbe healthy, because he and only he is the leader of the generation. With tears in his eyes, the scholar cried to heaven and aroused the congregation, which was mostly composed of Lithuanian Jews, to pray for the Rebbe's recovery.

== His Connection with the Rebbe ==
Once Rabbi Hirschprung gave a lecture at a summer Torah gathering in 1987 in the Catskill Mountains, New York. When the audience expressed amazement at his incredible knowledge of the Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmud by heart, Rabbi Hirschprung said: "You think this is expertise? Do you want to see true expertise? Open any of the dozens of volumes of Likkutei Sichos, study each talk with the footnotes and then you'll understand what expertise is!"

On one occasion, Rabbi Hirschprung told about one of the first times he had a private audience with the Rebbe. During their conversation, the halachic definition of "immediately" and "at once" came up. He was stunned by the Rebbe's ability to "walk" with him through the entire Talmud and later commentaries to collect all the places where these definitions are mentioned.

The Rebbe showed special affection toward Rabbi Hirschprung. On many occasions, the Rebbe called him a "living Torah scroll." Every time he came to a farbrengen or dollar distribution, the Rebbe blessed him warmly.

On one occasion, during the controversy against the Rebbe in the 1980s, Rabbi Hirschprung was invited to a family celebration in Israel, and was sent free flight tickets, with the ultimate goal being to defame - God forbid - the Rebbe's honor. When the Rabbi heard about this, he immediately canceled his trip, and this was the day before the flight, when all his suitcases were packed. It happened that one of America's great rabbis was invited to a political conference in government circles in Israel. During this period, the Rebbe was fighting to amend the "Who is a Jew?" law, and Rabbi Hirschprung's participation could have been interpreted as supporting the government's position not to amend the law. Rabbi Hirschprung didn't hesitate and called to tell him not to go. The rabbi told Rabbi Hirschprung that only if he would rule according to Jewish law that it's forbidden for him to go would he not go. Rabbi Hirschprung immediately responded that according to Jewish law there is a complete prohibition to travel to that place.

A similar thing happened when the Rebbe said that all rabbis should sign a halachic ruling that stated it's forbidden to give any part of the Land of Israel to Arabs. Rabbi Hirschprung sat for several hours with an acquaintance's phone, dialed the numbers of various rabbis, and explained to them the importance of their signatures. Dozens of rabbis understood the serious implications of returning territories from the Land of Israel, and they opposed the move.

== His Torah Learning Connection with the Rebbe ==
Rabbi Hirschprung would ask the Rebbe about all his doubts in learning.

On one occasion he expressed about the Rebbe: "I visited the Lubavitcher Rebbe many times, and I testify about him that there isn't a Rashi in the Talmud that he doesn't know and there isn't a Midrash in the world that he doesn't know."

During the Tefillin campaign, he sent together with the other Montreal rabbis a letter of support for the Rebbe's campaign.

== Regarding "Yechi" ==
From Rabbi Hirschprung's letter published on 13th of Iyar, 1997:

"I hereby state my clear opinion on this (without elaborating on all the discussions, as I have already heard the matter in detail, and this is not the place to elaborate). All the debate about the singing and printing and the matter of 'Yechi Adoneinu Moreinu V'Rabbeinu Melech HaMoshiach L'olam Va'ed' and everything connected to it - there is not even a shadow of a halachic question about it, and it has explicit sources in the Talmud, Zohar, and from the great Kabbalists upon whom we (all of Israel) rely even for practical law. (Besides this, the Lubavitcher Rebbe's authority is great etc. - in the category of a Rabbi who is also a Tanna, and if he used these letters regarding his father-in-law, and hundreds of times, this alone can be an authoritative source)."

"And similarly regarding the ways of influencing fellow Jews etc., the Lubavitcher Rebbe and Chabad Chassidim themselves have already proven their expertise, and who knows better than them what is the correct approach to bring Jews closer, and in a way that only this and nothing else etc..."

In the same letter he writes further:

"Whose opinion will be more accepted - the opinion of Lubavitch, who are engaged throughout the world and America in general, with great friendship, and continue to capture the hearts of fellow Jews, or the words of some Rosh Yeshiva (even several of them). And when Lubavitch will print - the source for their conduct, how it is founded on our Sages in both revealed and hidden Torah (and on the Rebbe's own words), what will it help if someone declares his own 'Torah opinion'."

Rabbi Hirschprung gave his approbation to the book "Yechi HaMelech HaMoshiach" in which Rabbi Sholom Dovber Wolpo proves that the Rebbe is presumed to be Moshiach.

He passed away on the 27th of Tevet 1998.

The {{tlx|documentation}} template is used to contain the [[CP:TDOC|documented information and instructions]] of a certain template, usually from a /doc subpage. It can also be configured to load the content from other pages or be directly fed by text.

This template has two parts: the big "documentation box" with the documentation inside alongside a toolbar (the <code>[view][edit][history][purge]</code> links), and the smaller "link box" that shows metadata about the documentation alongside the [[Chabadpedia:Template sandbox and test cases|sandbox and testcases]] links.

Use of this template allows templates to be [[Chabadpedia:Protection policy|protected]], where necessary, while allowing anyone to edit the documentation and categories.

'''Substitution''' is a function whereby, when an editor saves a page, an item in the [[Help:Wikitext|wikicode]] is permanently replaced with its current value. In particular, [[Help:Template|templates]] and [[Help:Magic words|magic words]] can be substituted, as an alternative to [[Help:Transclusion|transclusion]]. The difference is that when a template is substituted on a page, its appearance on that page will no longer be affected by later changes made to the template itself (as is the case in a transcluded template).

Substitution is done using the <code>subst:</code> modifier after the double opening braces. For example, to substitute the template {{tl|Article for deletion}}, type <code><nowiki>{{subst:Article for deletion}}</nowiki></code>. You can check the resulting wikitext before saving by clicking "Show changes" (and see what the page will look like by clicking "Show preview").

[[Help:variable|Variable]]s and [[Help:parser function|parser function]]s can also be substituted, meaning that their current value will be recorded permanently on the page – they will not be re-evaluated whenever someone views the page.

== When to use substitution ==
Generally speaking, templates are [[Help:Transclusion|transcluded]] rather than substituted, although there are some that are specifically designed to be substituted (and may not work if transcluded). Some reasons for substituting templates include:
* making the resulting page independent of future changes to the template
* enabling other automatic replacements to occur (for example, a template may contain four tildes, which will be replaced by the user's signature and timestamp provided the template is substituted)
* enabling the page to be copied to another project without copying the template
* making page rendering faster for the server
* making the correspondence between wikitext and rendered page easier to understand (the opposite may also apply)

Disadvantages of substitution may include:
* Updates to the template will not be reflected on the target page
* The resulting wikitext is longer and more complicated
* Other users cannot see that the text was produced using a template (and will not learn to use the template)
** Many templates add a hidden comment such as <code><nowiki></nowiki></code> to the end of their output to mitigate this issue.

Time-dependent variables are substituted to make the rendered page independent of the time at which it is viewed. Substituting page-dependent variables makes the resulting wikitext independent of renaming of the page and of copying to another page.

== Syntax ==
To substitute a template, use the same syntax as for [[Help:Transclusion|transclusion]], but include <code>subst:</code> after the opening double braces. For example, to substitute the template {{tl|afd}}, type <code><nowiki>{{subst:afd}}</nowiki></code>. Parameters can be included as in the case of transclusion, for example <code><nowiki>{{subst:afd|Some article}}</nowiki></code>.

Pages not in the template namespace can also be substituted, e.g. <code><nowiki>{{subst:User:Cleverclogs/My box}}</nowiki></code>. To substitute the current content of a page in [[CP:mainspace|mainspace]] (i.e. one with no namespace prefix), two colons are required, as in <code><nowiki>{{subst::Page}}</nowiki></code>. If a substituted page or template does not exist, the entire expression (with braces and subst:) will remain unchanged in the wikitext and on the page.

Use the same syntax to substitute variables and parser functions, e.g. <code><nowiki>{{subst:PAGENAME}}</nowiki></code> or <code><nowiki>{{subst:#switch:{{NUMBEROFADMINS}}|1=Foo|1000=Bar|#default=Baz}}</nowiki></code>.

There may be whitespace between the opening braces and the "subst:". However it is recommended not to have any space or newlines immediately after the "subst:", as this will not work in every case.

== Technical implementation ==
Substitution is part of the process performed on saving a page, and causes the wikitext saved as a result of the edit to differ from the text which the user actually entered in the edit window. Other replacements performed during this process include expansion of links using the [[CP:pipe trick|pipe trick]], and replacement of multiple tildes with signatures and timestamps.

This means that substitution necessarily occurs before any actions performed at the time of page rendering (conversion of the stored wikitext to HTML). In particular, ''substitutions are done before transclusions''. So typing <code><nowiki>{{subst:Help:L{{in(tut)}}k}}</nowiki></code> will not do substitution, even though {{tl|in(tut)}} returns the text "in" and [[Help:Link]] exists. The transclusion of {{tl|in(tut)}} has not yet taken place when the substitution is attempted. However, replace <code><nowiki>{{in(tut)}}</nowiki></code> with <code><nowiki>{{subst:in(tut)}}</nowiki></code>, and both substitutions will be performed in the expected order.

Similarly:
* Typing <code><nowiki>{{subst:#if:{{x0}}|yes|no}}</nowiki></code> gives the wikitext "yes", even though {{tl|x0}} is an empty template, since the conditional parameter evaluates to the non-empty string "<nowiki>{{x0}}</nowiki>". However <code><nowiki>{{subst:#if:{{subst:x0}}|yes|no}}</nowiki></code> produces "no", since the inner substitution is performed first.
* Typing <code><nowiki>{{subst:#expr:2*{{{p|3}}}}}</nowiki></code> returns ''Expression error: unrecognised punctuation character "{"'', as the undefined parameter <nowiki>{{{p}}}</nowiki> has not been replaced by its default value (3) when the substitution occurs.
* If {{tl|t6}} contains the text "t2|a", then <code><nowiki>{{ {{subst:t6}} }}</nowiki></code> will produce the wikitext "<nowiki>{{ t2|a }}</nowiki>", rendered as "{{t2|a}}" Contrast this with the behaviour of <code><nowiki>{{ {{t6}} }}</nowiki></code>, which is rendered as "{{ {{t6}} }}", because the parser does not reinterpret the pipe as a separator during the non-substituted expansion stage. (Similarly, <code><nowiki>{{subst:{{subst:t6}} }}</nowiki></code> gives the wikitext <code><nowiki>{{subst:t2|a }}</nowiki></code>, which only on the next edit will be substituted with {{t2|a}}.)

Clicking the "Show changes" button during editing shows the wikitext that will result ''after'' substitution and other immediate replacements are carried out. Clicking "Show preview" shows what the rendered page will look like after these replacements.

If a page substitutes itself (e.g. in the noinclude part of a template page) it substitutes the old version, as it was before the current edit.

If the expansion of a substituted template itself contains instances of the <code>subst:</code> syntax, then the substitutions are performed recursively. However ''substitution is not automatically recursive'' – if a substituted template contains ordinary transclusions or variables and parser functions which are not explicitly substituted, then these will not be substituted.

Note also that if instances of the <code>subst:</code> syntax appear in a template that is being ''transcluded'', then they will be rendered unchanged (as "<nowiki>{{subst:...}}</nowiki>"), since no substitution in wikitext is possible at the rendering stage. This feature can be exploited to control template behaviour (see [[#Making templates behave differently when transcluded or substituted|§ Making templates behave differently when transcluded or substituted]]). However, it may be inconvenient when a template is designed to be possible to transclude as well as substitute – in this case <code>safesubst:</code> can be used instead of <code>subst:</code> (see [[#safesubst|§ The safesubst: modifier]]).

=== <span class="anchor" id="safesubst"></span>The <code>safesubst:</code> modifier ===

The <code>subst:</code> modifier can be replaced by the alternative modifier <code>safesubst:</code>. The two have the same behaviour, except when they are encountered during non-substituted expansion (transclusion or direct viewing) of a template. In such a situation, the code <code><nowiki>{{subst:...}}</nowiki></code> remains unparsed, whereas the <code><nowiki>{{safesubst:...}}</nowiki></code> is treated as if no modifier were present – and so the subtemplate is transcluded or the variable or parser function evaluated.

Hence the <code>safesubst:</code> modifier is used in the code of templates which are designed to produce recursive substitution when substituted; but that are also intended to work when transcluded or simply to be viewed directly. Contrasted with using the <code>subst:</code> modifier, such templates would break in such cases of transclusion (and possibly on direct viewing).

== Recursive substitution ==
As mentioned above, substitution is not automatically recursive. So if a substituted template has code containing transclusions of other templates and parser functions, that code will be copied "as is" into the resulting wikitext – the transcluded items will not themselves be substituted.

To make substitution work recursively, you must include the <code>subst:</code> syntax in the code of the calling template. However, you cannot do this by simply typing "subst:" within the template, as the substitution would then be performed as soon as the template is saved. There are two ways to work around this problem:
* Use <code><nowiki>subst:<noinclude /></nowiki></code> in place of plain <code>subst:</code>. The noinclude tag breaks up the substitution syntax when the template is saved, but will be stripped away when it is later substituted, allowing the inner substitution to take effect. Alternatively, a larger part of the template code can be wrapped in {{tag|onlyinclude}}. Then the wrapped code is ignored on the template page itself but not when it is transcluded.
* Make "subst:" the possible value of an expression containing a parameter, such as <code><nowiki>{{{subst-foo|subst:}}}</nowiki></code>, which will evaluate to "subst:" provided the parameter ''subst-foo'' is not set. This is a more flexible solution, as it allows the behaviour to be controlled via the parameter. For example, such a template might be called using <code><nowiki>{{subst:</nowiki>{{var|Templatename}}<nowiki>|subst-foo=|...}}</nowiki></code>, assigning the parameter an empty value and thus turning off the second level of substitution. If it is not planned to use the parameter, the parameter name is often chosen to be the empty string, giving <code><nowiki>{{{|subst:}}}</nowiki></code>, but this can have unexpected results if a value is assigned to the empty string parameter (e.g. <code><nowiki>{{Templatename|=foo}}</nowiki></code>).

[[Help:Guided tours|Guided tours]] can make posts on behalf of users, such as automatically posting the contents of a wiki page onto a talk page. This is an example using the actual [[Template:Like]], and a hypothetical Template:Foo. You are attempting to include the Template:Foo, and indirectly the Template:Like, on a third page through transclusion and substitution. Template:Like displays this symbol: {{Like}}

For example, let's say the Template:Foo contained the wikitext <code><nowiki>{{Like}}</nowiki></code>. If you then transclude it, using the wikitext <code><nowiki>{{Foo}}</nowiki></code>, this will transclude the Template:Like as you would expect. But if you use the wikitext <code><nowiki>{{subst:Foo}}</nowiki></code>, when you save it, you find the wikitext <code><nowiki>{{Like}}</nowiki></code> substituted rather than the wikitext of the page Template:Like. The substitution has not been recursive.

An example of recursion would be if the Template:Foo contained the wikitext <code><nowiki>{{{{{|safesubst:}}}Like}}</nowiki></code>. Now if you transclude it, using the wikitext <code><nowiki>{{Foo}}</nowiki></code>, this will transclude the Template:Like just as before. == Making templates behave differently when transcluded or substituted ==
Sometimes it is desirable to make a template behave differently when substituted rather than when transcluded. A common trick for doing this is to use an expression like <code><nowiki>{{{{{subst|subst:}}}ns:0}}</nowiki></code>. This evaluates to the empty string if the template is being substituted (since the inner substitution takes effect, giving the prefix of [[CP:namespace|namespace]] 0, which is empty), but to "<nowiki>{{subst:ns:0}}</nowiki>" if the template is being transcluded (since substitution cannot take place after transclusion).

A common application is in templates which are designed only to be substituted, to make them produce a warning if they are mistakenly transcluded instead. This is done in templates like {{tl|prod}}, which are designed to produce a timestamp (e.g. for adding pages to dated categories), and will not be able to do this if transcluded.

A template, {{tl|issubst}}, has been created to simplify this. It returns "yes" if substitution is being performed, or the empty string otherwise. This can then be used as the parameter of a conditional parser function to make the template display a warning method if it is being transcluded, or to otherwise change the behaviour of a template depending on whether it is being transcluded or substituted.

== Documenting substitution ==
Usage of a template through <code>subst:</code> does not automatically show up in page histories. Therefore, providing the line of wikitext containing "subst:" in the [[Help:edit summary|edit summary]] is especially useful.

Also, pages with a substituted template do not show up in backlinks, and the template does not appear in the list of transcluded templates on the edit page. The template could add pages to a category to track substitutions, but listing this category on a page may clutter the list of content-based categories the page is in. Also, comments outside noinclude tags are included in the wikitext. Thus a comment can be used to mention the template. Substitution of parameters does not work inside comments, but a workaround for this is to begin an intended comment with <code><nowiki><!<noinclude />--</nowiki></code> so that it turns into a comment once transcluded.

== Limitation ==
Substitution is not available inside {{tag|ref}} and {{tag|gallery}} tags. If you write {{tnull|subst:foo}}, it is not substituted nor transcluded, but remains as-is (it's a known bug, see {{phab|T4700}} and [gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/272916/ gerrit:272916] for current status).

However it is possible to bypass this limitation by using the magic word #tag. If you write, for instance, {{tnull|safesubst:<nowiki>#</nowiki>tag:ref|content of the reference}}, the ''content of the reference'' will be substituted and the {{tnull|<nowiki>#</nowiki>tag:ref<nowiki>|</nowiki>...}} will be replaced with {{tag|ref}}. A more concrete example:
If you write for instance {{tnull|safesubst:<nowiki>#</nowiki>tag:ref|...Title<nowiki>=</nowiki>ExampleTitle|archivedate<nowiki>=</nowiki><nowiki>{{subst:TODAY}}</nowiki>|Edition<nowiki>=</nowiki>Hardcover...}}
then the software will perform substitutions on the text within the last field and the {{tnull|<nowiki>#</nowiki>tag:ref<nowiki>|</nowiki>...}} will be replaced with {{tag|ref}}around the altered text, and the reference will be saved with the substitution; it'll be saved as "{{tnull||...Title<nowiki>=</nowiki>ExampleTitle|archivedate<nowiki>=</nowiki>29 January 2016|Edition<nowiki>=</nowiki>Hardcover|...}}" with {{tag|ref}} around it.
In other words, first the software will expand the templates and then place that expanded text within reference tags.
