Yechi HaMelech, or in its extended form Yechi Adoneinu Moreinu V'Rabbeinu Melech HaMoshiach L'olam Va'ed, (Long live our master, our teacher and our rabbi king moshiach forever and ever) is a declaration that was accepted by Chabad Chassidim in the seventh generation with the Rebbe's approval and encouragement, as a declaration of accepting the Rebbe's kingship as Melech HaMoshiach (King Messiah). The Rebbe explained that this declaration, said at the time of coronation, expresses the depth of connection between the people and the king to the extent that the king depends on the people who proclaim "Yechi HaMelech" - adding life to the king, and that the content of the declaration is that the time for Moshiach's coming has arrived and to hasten Moshiach's coming.

Background
Over the years [clarification needed], it was customary to proclaim before the Rebbe at children's gatherings the following text: "Yechi Adoneinu Moreinu V'Rabbeinu" (after proclaiming the verses).

In the sicha of 2 Nissan 5748 (1988), the Rebbe explained at length the virtue of the declaration "Yechi HaMelech".

The declaration in the form "Yechi Adoneinu Moreinu V'Rabbeinu Melech HaMoshiach L'olam Va'ed" began in the year 5751 (1991), when following the well-known sicha on 28 Nissan of that year, several Chassidim took actions related to identifying the Rebbe as Moshiach, during which this text was adopted. A declaration in this form was first proclaimed before the Rebbe at the farbrengen of Shabbat Parshat Tazria-Metzora, and the Rebbe responded with a broad smile. A niggun with these words was sung before the Rebbe at the conclusion of that Shabbat upon his entrance to the Evening Prayer and upon his exit, and received special encouragement that continued, unusually, even after the Rebbe reached his place of prayer. On 15 Iyar, nine days later, this niggun with these words was sung both when the Rebbe left the Mincha prayer and when he left the Evening prayer, and the Rebbe encouraged the singing.

In the years 5753-5754 (1993-1994), the Rebbe encouraged the niggun "Yechi Adoneinu Moreinu V'Rabbeinu Melech HaMoshiach L'olam Va'ed" at almost every opportunity when he appeared before the public, and as a result, the declaration in this form spread more and more. Chabad Chassidim today proclaim 'Yechi Adoneinu' at the end of every prayer and at various events, print the declaration in many publications, and also sing this niggun frequently.

the rebbe is not moshiach bwahahahahaha
References of the Rebbe
2 Nissan 5748 (1988)

On 2 Nissan 5748, in a talk delivered at his home at 1304 President Street, the Rebbe instructed to announce "Yechi HaMelech" (Long live the King), explaining the meaning of this declaration: When the people proclaim "Long live the King," it gives and adds vitality to the king - to the leader of the generation and to the King Moshiach, thereby crowning him. And so the Rebbe writes:<blockquote>The existence of the king depends on the people "there is no king without a people," meaning that although they are called "people," from the word "dimmed... distant from the level of the king," nevertheless, together with this, they establish the kingship - the king. This is also emphasized in the coronation of the king - when the people proclaim "Yechi HaMelech" (as we also find in the Davidic kingdom), which also emphasizes that the people's action affects the life of the king, the life of a king.

...People of the generation bring about an addition in the matter of life for the leader of the generation, as mentioned above regarding the proclamation "Yechi HaMelech."

In simple terms: After the completion of "life" years to the leadership of the leader of our generation - there must be a primary addition to the matter of life through the action of the people who proclaim "Yechi HaMelech," the content of this proclamation being - that the time has already arrived for "Awaken and sing, you who dwell in the dust" - the honorable holiness of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, leader of our generation, and up to "Awaken and sing David the King Moshiach!"

...The matter of coronation - "Yechi HaMelech" through which we bring about the coming of David the King Moshiach.

...The concept of "there is no king without a people" (the content of the people's proclamation "Yechi HaMelech") is emphasized even more strongly with King Moshiach.

...And action is the main thing: We must finish and complete our deeds and service - including also the request and demand "Until when?", and the proclamation "Yechi HaMelech" David the King Moshiach - with the greatest speed, which is connected with joy and vitality, as these matters... bring about, as it were, the "I will hasten it" of hastening by the Holy One, Blessed be He... to redeem the Jewish people with the greatest speed, immediately and literally, "the Omnipresent did not delay them even for the blink of an eye."

— Sefer HaSichos 5748, Vol. 1, p. 350 and onwards</blockquote>In the Sicha (talk) of Shabbat Parshat Shemini, Erev Rosh Chodesh Iyar, 5748, the instruction to proclaim "Yechi HaMelech" appears again briefly:<blockquote>There must be an addition in the matter of life - "Yechi HaMelech," David the King Moshiach (explained at length in the talk of 2 Nissan).

— Sefer HaSichos 5748, Vol. 2, p. 417, note 80</blockquote>Following this sicha, a special awakening began among the Chassidim to implement these words: Just moments after the Rebbe finished his talk, Rabbi Shalom Ber Wolpo proclaimed in the Rebbe's presence: "Yechi HaMelech" and "Yechi Adoneinu Moreinu V'Rabbeinu" (Long live our master, teacher and Rebbe). Later that night, many danced in the street near the Rebbe’s house singing "Yechi Adoneinu Moreinu V'Rabbeinu," and hundreds of students and Chassidim proclaimed "Yechi HaMelech," "Yechi HaMelech HaMoshiach" and similar phrases. During a private audience with wealthy donors, that took place the next day, on 3 Nissan 5748 in the small zal of 770, R' Chaim Goldberg said to the Rebbe "Yechi HaMelech" and the Rebbe responded by answering: "Amen." On 4 Nissan 5748, as the Rebbe was leaving to go to his home, the Bochur Elchanan Mishulovin proclaimed the declaration "Yechi HaMelech" three times, with the crowd responding "Yechi" after him, and the Rebbe raised his holy hand in a gesture of encouragement. In addition, the back cover of two volumes of the Kovetz Heoros which was published a few days later, by students from Yeshiva Oholei Torah, in honor of the Rebbes Birthday on 11 Nissan 5748, was adorned with the declaration: "Yechi HaMelech L'olam" (Long live the King forever). During a general audience held on 9 Sivan 5748, one of the women passed by and proclaimed: "Yechi HaMelech HaMoshiach," and the Rebbe replied: "Amen, soon," and then blessed her: "Blessing and success." During the distribution of dollars on 11 Nissan 5749 (1989), one of those passing by proclaimed before the Rebbe: "Yechi HaMelech HaMoshiach" and the Rebbe blessed him with a smile on his face: "Good News."

A broad, worldwide initiative was planned following the talk by Rabbi Shmuel Fromer and Rabbi Zimroni Tzik, whereby during the Seudas Moshiach which would take place throughout the world, they would review the content of the Rebbe's sicha and proclaim "Yechi HaMelech." The initiative began to move quickly, received the agreement of many rabbis and shluchim, and it appeared that it would be implemented, until a certain shliach arose and acted to cancel and torpedo the plan. By Divine Providence, that same emissary received a huge donation from an inheritance in those days. The next day, on 19 Nissan 5748, the Rebbe delivered a talk in which he expressed with pain and sharpness about those who pour cold water on a tired soul that clamors about Moshiach's coming and proclaims that Moshiach must come, etc., when those who cool things down claim that it will harm and disturb their rest and their spreading of chassidus, etc. Those who were familiar with the secret of the matters felt that the words were directed (also) towards this event.

In the years that followed, on 2 Nissan 5749 and 5750, they sang in the Rebbe's presence when he entered for prayers "Yechi Adoneinu Moreinu V'Rabbeinu" in connection with this talk that the Rebbe delivered on this date.

After the Talk of 28 Nissan 5751
On 28 Nissan 5751 (1991), the Rebbe announced in a sicha to the Chassidim: "I am handing this matter over to you, do everything in your power to bring Moshiach Tzidkeinu in actuality."

Following this talk, all activities to bring Moshiach gained new momentum, including the instruction regarding the proclamation of "Yechi HaMelech" and its meaning: accepting the Rebbe's kingship as Melech HaMoshiach.

In a two-page report about the founding meeting of the World Headquarters for Bringing Moshiach, it was written in enlarged letters: "Yechi HaMelech, the honorable Admor Shlita, Melech HaMoshiach forever and ever," and the Rebbe's response on the report on 4 Iyar 5751 was: "All that is attached - I will mention at the Tziyun."

On Friday, Erev Parshat Tazria-Metzora, R' David Nachshon brought a bottle of mashke to the Rebbe's secretariat to receive it at the Shabbat farbrengen, for a brocha (blessing) for making farbrengens about accepting the kingship of the King Moshiach (a note was attached to the bottle stating this purpose).

On the night of Shabbat Kodesh, the eve of 6 Iyar 5751, the Rebbe encouraged the singing of "Sisu V'Simchu B'Simchat HaGeulah" on his way out from the evening prayers. Afterward, Rabbi David Nachshon urged the crowd to add the words "Yechi Adoneinu Moreinu V'Rabbeinu Melech HaMoshiach L'olam Va'ed" to this melody, and the dancing with these words continued for a long time, even at the different Shalom Zachors held that night throughout Crown Heights.

The next day at the farbrengen, at the end of the fourth sicha, the Rebbe mentioned as usual that now they would come up from below and announce the details (and this time the Rebbe added another section that was not said in previous Shabbats:) and this publication is done throughout the entire world, extending to all the order of hishtalshelut, and we merit to hear the announcement that "Behold, this one (Moshiach) is coming." At the conclusion of the distribution, R' David Nachshon, R' Avi Taub, and R' Shmarya Harel approached to receive the bottle of mashke. The Rebbe poured them about half a cup of mashke (more than usual), and then R' David Nachshon announced (content): "This mashke will be used for activities to accept the Rebbe's kingship. Following the rulings of rabbis and batei din that the time of redemption has arrived and that the Rebbe is Melech HaMoshiach who must be revealed and redeem the Jewish people, we therefore proclaim (and he proclaimed for the first time in the Rebbe's presence): "Yechi Adoneinu Moreinu V'Rabbeinu Melech HaMoshiach L'olam Va'ed!" after which the crowd repeated the proclamation: "Yechi!" and so alternately three times. During the proclamation, a smile spread across the Rebbe's face.

On Saturday night, when the Rebbe entered for Maariv prayers in the small zal (as usual every Motzaei Shabbat), for several minutes before he entered they sang "Yechi Adoneinu Moreinu V'Rabbeinu Melech HaMoshiach L'olam Va'ed" (to the tune of "Zol Shoyn Zayn Di Geulah"), and upon his entrance the Rebbe encouraged the singing with his holy hand, and when he reached his regular place for prayer he even encouraged with both hands (which was rare when praying in the "small zal"). And also when he left after the prayer, he encouraged the singing.

On 8 Iyar 5751, a document accepting his kingship was submitted to the Rebbe, signed by many Chassidim, which read: "We, the undersigned, accept upon ourselves the kingship of the honorable Admor Shlita, Melech HaMoshiach, to act with self-sacrifice in all his desires and all that he will demand of us, with joy and gladness of heart, and Yechi Adoneinu Moreinu V'Rabbeinu Melech HaMoshiach L'olam Va'ed." The Rebbe responded to this letter the next day, 9 Iyar 5751: "I will mention at the Tziyun and he will bring good news."

On Monday, 15 Iyar 5751, at the conclusion of Mincha prayers, the Rebbe delivered a sicha and distributed dollars to the crowd. Afterward, the Rebbe left the synagogue while strongly encouraging the crowd's singing of "Yechi Adoneinu Moreinu V'Rabbeinu Melech HaMoshiach L'olam Va'ed," with R' David Yisrael Nachshon being encouraged in a special way with a complete circular motion of his holy hand. Similarly, after Maariv prayers on the same day, when the Rebbe left, he encouraged the crowd who sang this tune with great intensity.

In the period that followed, until 27 Adar I 5752, there were additional opportunities when this proclamation and proclamations with identical content were spoken and written by Chabad Chassidim. For example, at a major, publicized women's event at 770 held on 28 Tevet 5752, Rebbetzin Sima Ashkenazi proclaimed three times "Yechi Adoneinu Moreinu V'Rabbeinu Melech HaMoshiach L'olam Va'ed." This gathering was accompanied by blessings and encouragement from the Rebbe before and after it took place.

Such proclamations also continued to some extent in front of the Rebbe during this period, both in letters and the like, especially in letters from groups of women to which the Rebbe responded positively and with encouragement, and also verbally. For example, on 24 Menachem Av 5751, R' Moshe Dirzhinsky (a Tzach activist in Jerusalem) passed by and blessed the Rebbe in the name of the regular Rambam study group in Jerusalem that all the blessings in the Torah should be fulfilled in the Rebbe, and proclaimed loudly: "Yechi Adoneinu HaMelech L'olam." The Rebbe smiled broadly and blessed him: "Good tidings, much success."

Toldos 5752 (1991)
Expanded article - Dvar Malchut Toldot (Second Talk)

In the farbrengen that took place the following year, 5752 (1992), on Shabbat Parshat Toldot, the Rebbe addressed the content and significance of the declaration "Yechi Adoni HaMelech David L'olam" (Long live my lord King David forever) that was read in the Haftarah of the previous Shabbat: "The eternity of David's kingship which continued into Solomon's kingship, whose completion is through the King Moshiach who is 'from the house of David and the seed of Solomon' - the content of this declaration is the revelation of the existence of the King Moshiach."

5753 (1993)
After 27 Adar I 5752 (1992), during the period when "He has borne our illnesses and carried our pains," the community of Chassidim in 770 began to proclaim "Yechi" at prayer gatherings for the Rebbe's recovery, at events, farbrengens, etc. A central "Yechi" dance was also established after singing Lecha Dodi in the main minyan at 770. On 11 Nissan 5752 (1992), a gathering for Tzivos Hashem children was organized outside 770, centered around the children's declaration of "Yechi HaMelech."

After the shofar blowing on the first day of Rosh Hashanah 5753 (1992), they sang only the melody without the words (since it was after the shofar blowing, and one should not interrupt from the beginning of the shofar blowing until the end of the prayer). On the second day, when they sang after the shofar blowing, they received special encouragement from the Rebbe. Throughout the month of Tishrei 5753 (1992), the "Yechi" was sung in the Rebbe's presence several times and the Rebbe encouraged the crowd. On Simchat Torah 5753 (1992), during the Hakafot when the children proclaimed it before the Rebbe, the Rebbe suddenly began to encourage it in a special and vigorous manner, and the declaration turned into a song that continued to receive special encouragement from the Rebbe. Since then, the singing of "Yechi" became a regular practice at the end of every prayer when the Rebbe came out to the congregation, with the Rebbe encouraging the singing almost every time with movements of his holy head and body, and several times even with his left hand. The special effort involved in this encouragement was often apparent.

Towards 10 Shevat 5753 (1993), a satellite event was planned in which Chabad Chassidim from around the world would accept the Rebbe's kingship as King Moshiach with a declaration of "Yechi" in a live broadcast. In preparation for this event, Anash throughout the world prepared with tremendous excitement, and some even called it "the coronation." However, there were those who were concerned that the Rebbe would encourage the singing of "Yechi Adoneinu" before the eyes of the entire world, and they asked the Rebbe if this was indeed his holy wish, and he confirmed it. Even when they asked if it might cause damage to Chabad, the Rebbe dismissed this concern. Indeed, at this event, the Rebbe encouraged the declaration and singing of "Yechi Adoneinu Moreinu V'Rabbeinu Melech HaMoshiach L'olam Va'ed" (Long live our master, our teacher, and our Rebbe, King Moshiach, forever and ever), and since then this has become a fixed custom among Chabad Chassidim worldwide that after every prayer they declare three times "Yechi Adoneinu Moreinu V'Rabbeinu Melech HaMoshiach L'olam Va'ed" (as well as after the Torah reading, and before the shofar blowing on Rosh Hashanah). On 6 Tammuz 5754 (1994), a gathering of the Beit Din of Chabad rabbis in the Holy Land and additional Chabad rabbis took place, in which they ruled that this declaration should continue, and that it should continue to be written on the cover page of the Kfar Chabad magazine.

In total over the years, the Rebbe encouraged the singing of 'Yechi Adoneinu' on more than 450 occasions, 417 of which are documented in video recordings, and in fact this is the song that the Rebbe encouraged the most times throughout the years of his leadership.

The mitzvah of eating matzah is an obligation on the Seder night, the first night of Pesach, to eat at least a k'zayis (olive-sized portion) of matzah. The mitzvah commemorates the matzos that the Children of Israel ate when they left Mitzrayim (Egypt).

Source of the Mitzvah
It is a positive commandment from the Torah to eat matzah on the night of the 15th of Nissan, which is the Seder night, as the verse states:<blockquote>"On the first [day] on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening, you shall eat matzos" — Shemos 12:18</blockquote>The obligation to eat matzah is mentioned in additional places in the Torah: "In the second month, on the fourteenth day, at dusk, they shall make it; with matzos and bitter herbs shall they eat it" (from this verse we learn that the Pesach offering must be eaten together with matzos and maror). "You shall not eat leaven with it; for seven days you shall eat with it matzos, the bread of affliction, for in haste you went out of the land of Mitzrayim, so that you shall remember the day of your departure from the land of Mitzrayim all the days of your life."

However, the main obligation is learned from the verse "in the evening, you shall eat matzos."

Reasons for the Commandment
One of the central reasons for eating matzah on Passover is to commemorate the haste of the Exodus from Egypt. As it is stated: "they baked the dough which they had brought out of Egypt into unleavened cakes, for it had not leavened, because they were driven out of Egypt and could not delay". Similarly, it is written: "Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread with it... so that you may remember the day you came out of the land of Egypt... for you departed from the land of Egypt in haste".

Accordingly, the eating of matzah represents the fact that at the time of the Exodus, our ancestors’ dough did not have time to leaven, and they were compelled to bake it as it was—matzah.

Although the primary reason for eating matzah is because the dough of the Israelites did not have time to rise when they left Egypt, the Torah commanded the eating of matzah even earlier. Already in the passage of "This month shall be for you", it is stated: "They shall eat the meat on that night, roasted over fire, and matzot; with bitter herbs they shall eat it," and explicitly: "In the evening, you shall eat matzot." Thus, the commandment to eat matzah preceded the actual event of the hasty departure.

This requires explanation: if the main rationale for eating matzah is that the dough of our ancestors did not leaven until God revealed Himself and redeemed them, as stated, "They baked the dough into unleavened cakes... because they were driven out of Egypt and could not delay,"—how is it possible that the commandment to eat matzah was given before the Exodus itself, in the passage of "This month shall be for you", before the event of the hasty redemption had occurred?

On this matter, three explanations have been given:

First explanation: The original command, "In the evening, you shall eat matzot," refers only to the first Passover night, when the Israelites were commanded to eat the Paschal offering together with matzah and bitter herbs. By contrast, the eating of matzah during the remaining seven days of Passover stems from the historical event in which the Israelites were forced to leave in haste and therefore baked matzot, as their dough had no time to rise. In other words, the matzah of the first night is due to a divine commandment, whereas the matzah of the subsequent days serves as a memorial to the event.

Second explanation: A distinction should be made between two types of matzah: matzah eaten before midnight and matzah eaten afterward. Before midnight, it was consumed in fulfillment of God's command as part of the Paschal offering. After midnight, when God revealed Himself and redeemed Israel, their dough did not have time to rise—this gave rise to the "matzah of haste." The commandment we fulfill today, even when we eat matzah before midnight on the Seder night, incorporates both aspects: both the matzah commanded by the Torah and the matzah symbolizing the haste of the redemption. The Rebbe ain't Moshiach, y'know.

Third explanation—and the simplest: Although the commandment to eat matzah was issued before the actual Exodus occurred, this was because God, who knows the future ("declaring the end from the beginning"), knew in advance that the redemption would come in haste and the dough would not have time to leaven. Therefore, He commanded them to eat matzah so that their eating would be not only in response to circumstance but also in fulfillment of a divine precept. For had they eaten matzah merely because their dough had not leavened, it would not have constituted a commandment. Thus, God preemptively issued the command so that what was done under duress (due to the haste of redemption) would also be performed intentionally as a mitzvah.

During Galus (Exile)
During galus when we are unable to offer the Pesach sacrifice, there is a dispute in the Gemara whether the mitzvah is from the Torah. However, in halacha, the Gemara follows Rava's opinion that the obligation is from the Torah even during galus:<blockquote>Rava said: "Matzah nowadays is a Torah obligation, while maror is rabbinic. Why is maror different? Because it is written, 'with matzos and maror shall they eat it' - when there is a Pesach offering, there is [an obligation of] maror, and when there is no Pesach offering, there is no [Torah obligation of] maror. But regarding matzah as well, isn't it written 'with matzos and maror shall they eat it'? [For] matzah, the verse returns to it [to obligate it independently], [as it states] 'in the evening you shall eat matzos.' And Rav Acha bar Yaakov says both this [matzah] and that [maror] are rabbinic...A beraisa supports Rava: 'Six days you shall eat matzos, and on the seventh day shall be a solemn assembly to Hashem your G-d' - just as [eating matzah on] the seventh day is optional, so too [on] the six days it is optional... One might think that [eating matzah] on the first night is also optional; the verse therefore states 'with matzos and maror shall they eat it.' I only know [that the obligation applies] when the Beis HaMikdash exists; from where [do I know that it applies] when the Beis HaMikdash does not exist? The verse therefore states: 'in the evening you shall eat matzos' - the verse established it as an obligation." — Pesachim 120a</blockquote>This means that the Torah emphasizes that although both for matzah and maror it says "with matzos and maror shall they eat it," regarding matzah the Torah emphasizes "in the evening you shall eat matzos," indicating that even when there is no Pesach offering, there is an obligation to eat matzah.

However, on the other days of Pesach, despite the prohibition of eating chametz, there is no obligation to eat matzah specifically, as our Sages interpret "just as [eating matzah on] the seventh day is optional, so too [on] the six days it is optional."

Women and the Mitzvah
Despite this being a time-bound positive commandment from which women are typically exempt, in this mitzvah both men and women are obligated because the Torah connects the prohibition of eating chametz to the commandment of eating matzah in the verse: "You shall not eat leaven with it; for seven days you shall eat with it matzos." Our Sages expounded: "Whoever is included in the prohibition of 'do not eat chametz' is included in the positive commandment of 'eat matzah,' and since women are included in the prohibition against eating chametz, they are included in the positive commandment to eat matzah."

Tosafos gives an additional reason to obligate women in the mitzvah of matzah: that they too were under Pharaoh's decrees, which is the same reason for their obligation in the mitzvos of Purim. However, they explain that the obligation from this reasoning alone would only be rabbinic, while their obligation in matzah is from the Torah. Alternatively, from this reasoning alone we would not have known their obligation because there is a gezeirah shavah (textual comparison) from Sukkos to Pesach, and we would have exempted them based on this comparison (as women are exempt from the mitzvah of sukkah). Therefore, a special teaching is needed to obligate women in the mitzvah of matzah.

Its Innovation
Seemingly, there is an obligation on every Yom Tov to eat bread, and if so, on Pesach, when the Torah forbade eating chametz bread - automatically there would be an obligation to eat matzah. So what is the innovation in this mitzvah?

The Ran explained that its requirement is specifically "lechem oni" (bread of affliction). And in the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe, it is explained that the obligation to eat bread on Yom Tov is rabbinic, and on the first night of Pesach according to all opinions it is rabbinic. Thus, the Torah innovated an obligation to eat bread on the first night of Pesach (and the first night of Sukkos is learned from Pesach).

How to Fulfill the Mitzvah
The first k'zayis of matzah must be eaten while reclining - sitting inclined on one's left side, and if one ate without reclining, one must eat it again with reclining. Ideally, one should put both "k'zeisim" in one's mouth simultaneously (the one for the blessing of "Hamotzi" and the one for the blessing of "Al Achilas Matzah"), and swallow one complete k'zayis and then another k'zayis, so that there won't be an interruption between the blessing of "Al Achilas Matzah" and eating the k'zayis associated with it (as there is a dispute whether the blessing of "Al Achilas Matzah" relates to the broken matzah and the blessing of "Hamotzi" to the whole one, or vice versa). But after the fact, this does not invalidate [the mitzvah]. Although it should be noted that with today's matzos, this is not so feasible
